The Listening Service is a non-judgemental service offered in 15 GP practices across Aberdeen City, as well as the Health Village and GetActive@Northfield site. We have availability to see up to 50 clients a week across the 17 sites, with low, and in some cases, no waiting lists for clients.

Sessions are face to face, lasting 50 minutes, however there is the option for telephone and Near Me appointments from the Health Village if preferred.

Our service is a short term intervention giving people the space and time to reflect and work through issues. It is flexible to allow the clients to choose when they engage with the service. Clients can come with anything that is negatively impacting on their mental or emotional wellbeing such as bereavement, relationship breakdowns, work stress or just changes to life circumstances that feels out of their control.

You can find more information at NHS Grampian Listening Service.

Some recent feedback from GP practices include:

  • We are delighted with the service provided, we have received very positive feedback from our patients.
  • I regularly get positive feedback from patients who tell me how much they have benefitted from the service.
  • It is an essential part of the whole structure and it certainly helps take the pressure off our clinical team

Some feedback from our Clients include:

  • I was able to speak truthfully, in my own vernacular and I was listened to without prejudice. This allowed me to vocalise my issues and in doing so, begin to accept them. I could not have done this without the listener. I found it particularly helpful to have a person, the SAME person, every week, to discuss my life. I have a hectic work schedule, so this face to face service being offered in the local doctor surgery made such a difference. I feel this service really addresses an ever expanding need in our community for people to be able to talk about their problems and be listened to. To perhaps stop problems escalating before a crisis. A service which the NHS cannot readily provide due to staffing and budget constraints.
  • I felt “lighter” after my appointment as in a weight had been lifted and I could breathe more freely as I’d been holding in my thoughts and feelings too long
  • To have someone listen. To understand and make comments which provoked thoughts on different levels of what I was feeling and that I could confide. Confidence that someone was not judging nor challenging. This is a gentle experience but firmly makes you think and look at the experiences which have brought you to this point and how there can be light ahead.
