Our Communities - Healthy Weight Aberdeen

Working together to create healthier environments and reduce health inequalities across Aberdeen

Healthy Weight Aberdeen uses a Whole Systems Approach, bringing communities, organisations and services together to understand what shapes health locally. By looking at how the local system operates, partners can identify opportunities for change and take coordinated action to create healthier environments.

The Healthy Weight Aberdeen Action Plan has been informed by local data and evidence, systems mapping, action mapping and engagement with partners across Aberdeen. Together, these activities have helped identify opportunities for change and priorities for collective action.

What is Whole Systems Approach?

A Whole Systems Approach (WSA) to obesity is an evidence-based practice of drawing on local authorities, statutory bodies; engaging with community and local assets to create local approaches and environment more effective in making healthier choices. Science says that what we eat and how active we are is influenced by the environment we live, work and play in. WSA is taking actions that help in improving this environment.

Adopting a Whole Systems Approach can have multiple positive impacts including upon employability, productivity of local population and potential reduction in demand for health and social care services.
